Car Insurance (OC, AC, OCG)

Car Insurance OC (Mandatory Civil Liability Insurance)

What it is:
OC is a mandatory policy for all car owners in Poland. It covers damages caused by you to third parties in the event of an accident — repair of damaged vehicles, medical treatment of victims, and compensation for material or moral losses.
Optionally, you can add extra coverage such as NNW (Accident Consequences Insurance) or extended Assistance.

When it’s required:
—Always, if you own a registered vehicle!
—Without valid OC insurance, you cannot use your car. High fines apply even for a one-day gap between policies.

What it provides:
— Financial protection in case of damage to others;
— Peace of mind in case of an accident — the insurer covers the costs;
— Legal protection in case of lawsuits.
What you need to get it:

— Vehicle registration certificate;
— Proof of identity of the owner;
— In some cases — previous insurance history for discounts or additional vehicle/owner details.

Car Insurance AC (Autocasco – Voluntary Vehicle Insurance)

What it is:
AC is voluntary insurance that covers damage to your own vehicle — regardless of who is at fault in the accident. It also covers theft, vandalism, natural disasters, and damage caused by animals.

When it’s useful:
— in the event of an accident caused by you;
— in case of vehicle theft;
— when the car is damaged due to natural phenomena;
— in case of vandalism or collision with animals.

What it provides:
— compensation for repair or vehicle value;
— protection of your investment in the car;
— the possibility to get a replacement vehicle during repairs (depending on the package).

What you need to get it:
— vehicle registration certificate;
— proof of identity of the owner;
— vehicle condition assessment or technical inspection (sometimes required).

Border Insurance (OC graniczne – Short-Term Car Liability Insurance)

What it is:
Border OC is short-term mandatory civil liability insurance for vehicle owners entering Poland from abroad without a valid OC policy or an international “Green Card.”
It is a temporary policy that allows you to legally drive in Poland and other EU countries.

When it’s useful:
— when entering Poland with a vehicle registered outside the EU;
— if the international “Green Card” is missing or expired;
— when buying a car abroad and transporting it to Poland;
— when a foreign OC policy is not recognized in Poland.

What it provides:
— legal driving in Poland and most EU countries;
— financial protection for damages caused to third parties in an accident;
— avoidance of fines and legal problems during border or road inspections.

What you need to get it:
— vehicle registration documents;
— passport or another ID.

Duration:
The OC graniczne policy is usually valid for 30 days (sometimes longer, depending on your needs) and does not renew automatically.
